Woodhead Bakery workers were celebrating after nearly all the troubled business’ shops and factory were saved by two separate deals.Coopland & Sons (Scarborough) bought 18 of the shops, while Bakery Products Ltd, part of supermarket business Haldane Retail Group, snapped up the Scarborough bakery and 11 shops. Woodhead went into administration at the end of March, after being hit by inflation and rising wheat prices; only the Redcar store was closed, with the loss of 30 jobs.Midlands-based Bakery Products was set up specifically to manage the new business, appointing Woodhead’s long-standing MD Phil Davis as managing director of the new company. He will take full responsibility for management of the bakery, while Colin Woodhead, although now retired, will work as a consultant.Haldane Retail Group owns supermarkets trading under three fascias – Haldanes Stores, Haldanes Express and UGO. The bakery will supply all 20 of the new UGO stores, which are scheduled to open over the next six weeks, and will eventually supply all 44 stores in the portfolio. For the full story see the next issue of British Baker, out 22 April.>>Woodhead Bakery hit by rising wheat prices

If it feels like everything is more stressful these days, that’s because it is. Recent research by the University of Cambridge has shown that more than a third of people feel overwhelmed by technology today, including 34 percent of tech-savvy millennials.A separate study, conducted by Nielsen, found that 80 percent of American workers feel major stress in the office. A few reasons employees cited for feeling stressed out included long commutes, low pay, unreasonable workload, problematic co-workers and limited work-life balance. But there’s no need to suffer in silence. Keep chaos at bay by practicing these proven solutions to boost your energy, ratchet down your stress level and help you become a top performer:Decide if you want more or less of certain activities. Stress drains energy, leaving you low on mojo to achieve important tasks and reach goals. To regain your center when knocked off balance by daily stressors, thinking about how you are spending your time can help. In their book “Find Your Balance Point,” authors Brian Tracy and Christina Stein suggest that you can energize your life and feel less stressed by considering which activities are giving you the best results, and doing more of those things. continue reading » 69SHARESShareShareSharePrintMailGooglePinterestDiggRedditStumbleuponDeliciousBufferTumblr
Things are starting to heat up in the race for the Premiership Crown this season with the top place changing hands now on a regular basis. Only four points separates first place team Chelsea and fifth-placed Tottenham Hotspur which will add extra spice to the London derby in Week 13 of the Premier League. Most analysts are however tipping The Blues as the favorite due to their current outstanding form, but it is going to be tough against the only unbeaten side in the league.Chelsea fans will be pleased to see their team sitting top of the table after the dreadful campaign run last season. The Blues are flying at the moment, have kept six clean sheets on the bounce by winning their last six matches. After the doom and gloom of being walloped by Arsenal 3-0, they have been unbeaten and not conceded a single goal. Credit has to go to new manager, Antonio Conte, who after that defeat has managed to solve their defensive problems and made them the most solid defense in the league.Chelsea has a big advantage over the other teams chasing the league title as they did not qualify for Europe last season. It means they can fully concentrate on domestic competitions and gain from playing fewer matches. That will come in vital during the crunch time as we saw last season with Leicester City. In recent weeks the Blues have proved that they are genuine contenders for the league and are tipped as favorites. It is however vital that Chelsea win its next two matches if they are going to be considered genuine title contenders. After playing Spurs, they will then face Manchester City and if they manage to beat both teams, they will increase their lead over the pack. It will give them an advantage over the busy Christmas period and if they continue their fine form, they will be very difficult to overturn. Spurs remain the only unbeaten side in the Premier League but they have drawn too many games. With star striker, Harry Kane back from injury and saving them from their fifth draw in the league on the bounce in the finals minutes against West Ham with a brace, the fans at White Hart Lane will be extremely pleased to see their team back on track.Though still one of the favorites for the title, they cannot afford a big slip or they will find themselves with too many points to catch up.If they want to win the EPL this season they must beat Chelsea to close the gap to a single point between the two. If they lose, they will find themselves seven points adrift and therefore cannot afford too many more slip-ups if they are going to finish at the top. Both teams are going to be up for this crunchy encounter, so fans should be in for a high-intensity game. The winners will be well placed to go into the busy Christmas period and will put themselves in a great place to win the title. It is therefore not expected to be a high scoring match as they both have excellent defenses. The Blues ended Spurs’ hopes of winning the Premier League title in May after they came from two goals down to secure a 2-2 draw at Stamford Bridge in a match that also produced 12 yellow cards. But following Spurs’ disappointing Champions League exit in midweek at AS Monaco, Pochettino will be desperate for a better performance against England’s in-form team.Manchester City visit Turf Moor in the first match of the weekend in a game Burnley must have to recover quickly from Monday’s 4-0 defeat by West Bromwich Albion to prepare for The Citizens.Burley, however, can take encouragement from their previous encounters against the top sides in the Premier League, having beaten Liverpool at home, drawing at Manchester United and only losing to Arsenal due to a controversial last-minute goal.“We need to pick ourselves up. It’s a massive game next weekend and hopefully we can get some points from that. This was definitely our worst game of the season. It’s tough to take but this is football and we have to keep going. We also need to learn from our mistakes. We know what we did wrong and we just need to fix that and hopefully we will be all right next weekend. But we have shown against good teams we can play really well, so we will do that next weekend, definitely,” Johann Gudmundsson .City are third in the table on 27 points, 13 ahead of 12th-placed Burnley after 12 games going into today’s encounter. Seattle, Washington and Portland, Oregon know how to make their streets safer for pedestrians and cyclists. Both cities, have large and increasing numbers of those who look to walk, peddle and use mass transit to get around and long term plans are geared to encourage that evolution.“When people walk, bike, take mass transit to meet their daily needs it means they’re healthier, they arrive at work happier, more energized and it means they get to know their neighborhoods, their surroundings,” noted Dylan Rivera, public information officer for the Portland Bureau of Transportation.“For us this is something that we’ve been working on for decades and have made great strides,” in protecting the public, especially those walking and peddling, added James Curtin, Seattle’s director of public safety. The officials noted that some initiatives put in place over the years have actually resulted in significant reductions of serious accidents and fatalities.Curtin had data immediately available, noting that in 2007 there were a total of 14,971 police reported collisions and by 2013 that number had dropped to 10,310. For fatalities, Seattle had an average of 30 to 40 traffic fatalities a year – with “pedestrians most at risk, older pedestrians especially,” Curtin said, noting that is still true. But in 2014 that number had dropped to 14.By the middle of the 20th century large urban areas and their surrounding suburbs were being developed to accommodate more vehicular traffic rather than taking pedestrians into consideration, they said. “Like nobody was ever going to walk anywhere again,” was how Rivera characterized it.By the 1970s the thinking had begun to change, with officials giving some thought to how all of the population’s needs can be met safely.Portland has had for the last 10 years the largest bike commute rate of any major U.S. city, according to Rivera. “Now with communities and people revitalizing their downtowns and main streets,” Rivera observed, “they want people to walk and not have to rely on their cars to get around.”Portland, for instance, has more than 300 miles of bike paths, including on most of the city’s bridges, which see about 17,000-bicycle trips daily.Portland has also been installing what it calls bike boxes at the front of traffic intersections. It’s a colored designated area for cyclists to move to the front of the intersection, with vehicles queued behind the bikes and prevented from making right turns on red until the bikes proceed. “It adds visibility to the cyclists,” Rivera said, adding, “That’s been a very effective tool.”Portland officials have been reconfiguring major roadways, those with four lanes, reducing them to three, including a center lane left turn lane – what’s called “road diets” – that have improved safety for motorists and pedestrians, with studies showing that this one measure can reduce collisions by 40 percent, according to Rivera. The city has also installed more pedestrian-activated flashing lights at an increasing number of intersections.Seattle has been installing actual dividers separating bike paths from vehicular traffic for added safety, according to Curtin. For those walking, Seattle has islands separating wide thoroughfares, giving pedestrians a place to safely wait if they can’t cross in the designated time, Curtin said. The “road diets” have led to decreased motorist speeding. The city has adopted a policy of not putting striped crosswalks at three or more lane intersections without traffic lights, hoping to encourage pedestrians to cross at traffic signals, Curtin said.Like New York City and other major cities, Seattle has adopted a “Vision Zero” agenda to completely eliminate traffic/pedestrian fatalities, that is “really, really aggressive,” Curtin said.A major part of that plan involves reducing the speed limit through much of the city. “We know there is a direct relationship between speed of vehicles and survival, especially for pedestrians,” he said.Enforcement is another factor, Curtin added, with an aggressive campaign scheduled to begin at the end of April. So far camera-monitored traffic law enforcement for school zones – with fines going directly for education purposes – has been very effective, Curtin added.Portland has adopted a program where business owners can ask vehicle parking spaces be turned into bicycle parking. “We have a waiting list of dozens of businesses raising their hands, saying ‘I want one too,’” Rivera noted.Next on the agenda for Portland is looking at 10 particularly troublesome intersections, some with high fatality counts. City officials have reached out to business associations and neighborhood groups (who were all too ready to offer input) on what might be done to improve those sites, Rivera said. And while money can be tight, officials are looking at “short term, inexpensive improvements,” that can be easily accomplished, such as restriping roadways and installing flashing beacons, he said.Encouraging and protecting pedestrians isn’t just good public policy; it’s good economics for local businesses, Rivera stressed. “It’s helped our downtown businesses,” as residents are shopping more locally and has saved city residents about $2 million annually, in gas and vehicle maintenance costs, he said.By John BurtonJohn Burton can be reached at 732-219-5788 or by [email protected] stories in the Two River Times Crossroads series:Local Readers Offer Solutions (April 17 edition)Hazardous Crosswalks: Ambulance Hits Pedestrian on Broad Street (April 3, 2015)Hazardous Crosswalks: Walkers Share Collision Tales (Edition of April 3, 2015)Fair Haven Cycling Safety on the Fast Track (Edition of April 3, 2015)Editorial Opinion: Pedestrian Accident Urgent Reminder We Need Safer Street Crossings (Edition of April 3, 2015)Safety Moving Forward in Red Bank (Edition of March 20, 2015)Crossroads: Results of First Editorial Meeting About Pedestrian Safety in the Greater Red Bank Area (Edition of March 13, 2015)
Drazin said the increased sports book revenues, combined with subsidies approved by the state Legislature in February that will bring in an additional $10 million a year for purses, helped the park compile a 2019 stakes schedule worth $7.1 million that will run through the end of October. “It would be something more comfortable for the patrons. Right now our sports book is in the grand-stand. This would be located in the clubhouse. It’ll be a little fancier with a little more comfortable furniture. A place to encourage people to come and hang out for an extended period of time.” The bipartisan bill corrected a decision by former Gov. Chris Christie to do away with state subsidies, a decision that crippled a $4 billion revenue engine for the state, one that carries with it 13,000 jobs. “We were on edge the whole time, rooting for Jason the whole time. And I was in shock at the objection to Maximum Security. It made no sense. And when we heard they overturned the result, everyone around me was in shock. People were angry. People were screaming and saying things I don’t want to repeat. It was the wrong decision. In my mind he won the Derby. But as far as the racing world is concerned the winner is another horse,” Drazin said. “The number of things in this bill to ensure that every tax dollar is being used the right way should make every New Jersey taxpayer proud,” Sen. Vin Gopal (D-11) said at Tuesday’s event. “There are rigorous benchmarks that Monmouth Park has to meet and other guidelines. This is not just a giveaway. It’s something that is going to help a billion dollar industry and thousands of jobs here in Monmouth County.” “In our deal with William Hill, they have a contractual obligation to build another venue on site, on the clubhouse side of the park,” Drazin said. “The current thought is this will be a $5 to $10 million venue.” Drazin said he did notwant to interrupt the 2019season schedule with theconstruction and expectswork to begin in the fall fora 2021 launch. Monmouth Park’s 74th season will once again be highlighted by the $1 million TVG.com Haskell Invitational, which is scheduled for Saturday, July 20. Maximum Security is trained by Jason Servis, who began his industry career as a jockey room valet at the Oceanport track, and has developed into one of the sport’s elite trainers. But announcement of a new on-site sports wagering venue drew the most interest. Drazin said Tuesday that phase of the process wasjust the beginning. Photo By Bill Denver/EQUI-PHOTO The sports book’s footprint increased dramatically, expanding into the park’s grandstand. Drazin noted that Omaha Beach is another potential entry for the Haskell. Drazin, who was on hand at Churchill Downs for Saturday’s Derby, said he was crushed by the raw deal served to the local product. OCEANPORT – A powerful field for New Jersey’s most anticipated horse race and a bright future ahead for the local industry were on the docket for Dennis Drazin at Monmouth Park’s annual season-opening luncheon. The event’s headliner is expected to be Maximum Security, the horse that finished first in the field of 19 at Saturday’s 145th running of the Kentucky Derby before being disqualified 20 minutes after the run for the roses on a controversial interference ruling. Drazin also expects Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert to enter at least one of his three derby horses – Game Winner, Roadster and Improbable – in the race. Dennis Drazin, CEO of Darby Development, the operator of Monmouth Park speaks at the Opening Day Press Conference & Luncheon at Monmouth Park Racetrack in Oceanport, New Jersey on Tuesday May 7, 2019. Photo By Bill Denver/EQUI-PHOTO Drazin described a “glitzy” Las Vegas-style sports book and a higher-end clubhouse experience than what is currently offered. Through March of this year, the sports book has collected $5.44 million in combined revenue. Drazin said there are two options on the table for the venue. One is to construct a stand-alone building near the park’s valet parking area. However, the more plausible plan is to attach it to the Lady’s Secret Cafe, an eatery located outside the clubhouse that offers diners views of the park’s paddock and English walking ring. The ruling was appealed and that appeal was denied Monday, which led owner Gary West to remove his bay colt from the May 18 Preakness Stakes in Baltimore and return him to the stables atMonmouth Park Tuesdaymorning. STAR POWER ON HASKELL DAY It’s a race Drazin anticipates will have star power atop the bill. According to tax returns published by the New Jersey Division of Gaming Enforcement, the sports book generated $8.97 million in on-site revenue and another $3.5 million in online revenue from June through December 2018. The colthas undergone a successfulsurgery to correct the issueand has an opening in hisrace schedule on Haskell day. According to Drazin, after leading a historic U.S. Supreme Court victory in 2018 that legalized Garden State sports wagering, he returned to Oceanport and immediately entered discussions to expand the Monmouth Park Sports Book by William Hill.

A crack in Ethiopia 500 meters long took just days to form. New Scientist reported about a team of scientists who used seismic sensors to reconstruct the event. “They found that a 60-kilometre-long, 8-metre-wide dike of solidified magma formed in the rift, causing the crack, in a matter of days.” They believe the crack will some day form a new ocean like the Red Sea. The team was amazed by the rapid change. “The ferocity of what we saw during this episode stunned everyone,” said a team member who came over to study the continental rift that began in 2005 as plates began to shift (12/09/2005). “Similar dikes in Iceland are typically around 10 kilometres long and 1 metre wide and can take years to form,” the article said. “The new study shows the formation of dikes can occur in larger segments – and over much shorter periods of time – than previously thought.” They estimate it will take 4 million years for an ocean to form in the rift. The report on PhysOrg called this a “magnetic deformation.” The scientist interviewed was also interested in how quickly this occurred but said the ocean formation is “happening slowly, likely to take a few million years.”What’s ferocious is the hubris of scientists. The speed of this episode amazed them. They learned that big changes can occur faster than they thought. Then they turned right around and announced confidently that we will have to wait 4 million years to go surfing. Then spend millions and millions as recklessly as an identity thief with a stolen credit card. Who is going to wait those millions of years to tell them if they were right or wrong? It’s a built-in confidence scam. But scientists, who ought to know,Tell us that it must be so.Oh let us never, never doubtWhat nobody is sure about. – Hilaire Belloc.(Visited 20 times, 1 visits today)FacebookTwitterPinterestSave分享0
2. Lower the OpacityAdjusting the Opacity of an underlying video layer is another way to bring attention to your overlying graphics. Simply lowering the opacity of a video or still image will make your text stand out. Lowering the Opacity in conjunction with blurring is a quick and simple way to really make your text pop. Control your opacity in the Effect Controls panel. 6. Add a Shape LayerIf you’ve ever created captions in Adobe Premiere Pro, you’ll notice that a black background accompanies the white text. This makes the white text visible, no matter what’s in the background. You can manually create this in the essential graphics panel by adding a new rectangle shape layer and then resizing it. After you have your rectangle in position, adjust the opacity for the look you want. 4. Create MotionUse motion graphics templates to bring some life to your graphics. In Adobe Premiere Pro’s new Essential Graphics panel, you’ll find a handful of presets. I’ll grab one and bring it into my project and modify the text. Then, I’ll add a few additional keyframes to create constant-yet-subtle movement while the text is onscreen. A simple scaling or position animation can bring a graphic to life. 1. Blur the BackgroundOne of the main ways to make graphics stand out in your video is to make adjustments to elements in the background. Apply a slight blur effect to your underlying video layer and instantly draw the viewer’s attention to your overlying text. Think about when you shoot with a shallow depth of field during an interview to blur out the background. This makes your interview subject stand out from the background, drawing the viewer’s eye. To find several different blur effects, open the Effects panel and then search through Video Effects > Blur & Sharpen. 5. Change the PositionAs simple as it sounds, positioning can play a large role in how your text displays on a screen. Depending on what you have onscreen and the color of your text, the position can make your graphic stand out or blend into the background. If I’m using basic white text, for example, I want to find darker parts of the screen so that the contrast will help my text become more visible. 3. Add a StrokeIf you’re in a situation wherein you can’t or you don’t want to lower the opacity or add a blur effect to your background, you can add a stroke to your text layer. To show you how a stroke can help make your text more visible, I’ll use an example with simple black-and-white text. If I take white text and place it on a white background you cannot see the text at all. However, if I add a black stroke to my white text, it instantly becomes visible. Even if I change the background to black we still see the white text. Make your text graphics stand out in Premiere Pro with these 6 six tips.Cover image via Shutterstock.Adobe Premiere Pro’s latest update introduced the brand new Essential Graphics panel, an entirely new way to work with graphics. However, while the new layout offers video editors a different way to create and customize graphics, design principles remain the same. Let’s take a quick look at six simple tips to make your text stand out in Adobe Premiere Pro.
