After years of living in an Edwardian house in Toronto’s west end, the client decided it was time for change. She wanted to remain in her neighbourhood, but she was keen for a smaller home in order to declutter her life and she was excited to engage in the creative process of designing a house. Palmer found a small lot only a block away from her historic home and she approached LGA Architectural Partners to help her build a new home with a modest budget and a contemporary attitude. Save this picture!© Ben Rahn/A-FrameSimplicity and practicality were of prime importance. LGA designed a neatly stacked trapezoidal box that maximizes the space of the narrow lot and breathes within the generosity of the adjacent laneway. They clad the front and back façades in no- maintenance cedar to warmly greet the street, and the sides with a dark cement board to visually “remove” the private house from the shared laneway.Save this picture!© Ben Rahn/A-FrameLGA employed a number of strategies to create a spacious interior that belies its small footprint and modest street elevation. They organized the open concept interiors by cleverly defining rooms without closing off most spaces. A low counter separates the kitchen and entry vestibule and three stairs serving as seating lead down to the generous sunken living room.Save this picture!Ground Floor PlanSave this picture!Second Floor PlanBy placing the breakfast room at the front of the house facing a large window overlooking the street, LGA created an area that doubles as an indoor porch where Palmer and her family can sit and watch the street life, or draw the curtain for privacy. In the living room, built-in storage provides additional seating and leaves the room open and uncluttered. Sliding glass doors open to the backyard extending the interior space outside.Save this picture!© Ben Rahn/A-FrameOn the second floor and at the nexus of the house, Palmer’s library/office takes advantage of natural light and prime views with her desk placed in front of a floor-to-ceiling window overlooking mature backyard trees. Up a small stairway, the master bedroom and modest three-piece bathroom feel protected, but not cramped as big windows wash the interiors with natural light. A skylight above the open riser stairwell leading up to the second floor draws natural light down into the house, reducing the need for artificial light in the basement.Save this picture!© Ben Rahn/A-FrameThe interior artfully balances Palmer’s love of colour, texture and pattern with her need for neutral spaces to think with clarity and to display her books, art and artifacts. The cheerful green accent wall in the entry vestibule playfully contrasts the primarily bright white walls. Pops of turquoise on the inside of the kitchen cabinets delightfully surprise.Save this picture!© Ben Rahn/A-FramePalmer’s partner , a lighting designer, programed the LED light bank along the expansive white wall by the staircase, transforming the house itself into a canvas for an ever-changing light show. Palmer brought the furniture from her previous house and her vintage pieces are refreshed in their new contemporary setting.  The house is a play of contrasts – old and new, subtle and bold, playful and practical, small yet spacious.Save this picture!© Ben Rahn/A-FrameProject gallerySee allShow lessWhy New York Shouldn’t be a City for the One PercentArticlesCuratorial Team Announced For The 2016 Oslo TriennaleArchitecture News Share Photographs Year:  2013 ArchDaily Area:  2800 ft² Area:  2800 ft² Year Completion year of this architecture project Architects: LGA Architectural Partners Area Area of this architecture project ShareFacebookTwitterPinterestWhatsappMailOrhttps://www.archdaily.com/573299/garden-house-lga-architectural-partners Clipboard “COPY”last_img read more

The Avett Brothers Share Easygoing New Single, “Neapolitan Sky” [Listen]

first_imgFolk-rock band The Avett Brothers gave their fans a new single on Friday with a warm and easygoing song titled, “Neapolitan Sky”. The song’s arrival follows the previously shared singles, “Roses and Sacrifice” and “Trouble Letting Go”. All three stand-alone songs will presumably appear on the band’s forthcoming follow up studio album to 2016’s True Sadness, if and when it’s ever announced. The new ballad is a pretty relaxed song from the popular band, who are no strangers to penning lovely, acoustic-based ballads. “Neapolitan Sky” could almost be considered a lovely mix between an old Irish folk tune with the loose flow of a Jimmy Buffett beach tune. The song’s lyrics are pretty relatable for the current, somber mood of the season, as vocalist Seth Avett sings out, “What’s with this moment? What’s with this feeling? What’s with January and the locks on the door?” The song definitely provides a few minutes of warmth and melodic beauty while half the nation sits firmly in a wintertime depression.Scott Avett also shared a brief video to help announce the new single, which takes him from the sauna to the fireplace and beyond.Special Message From Scott Avett[Video: The Avett Brothers]The Avett Brothers recently announced their upcoming 2019 tour plans, which will see the band hitting the road to promote some of their new singles (and potentially a new album!) with a run of shows scheduled to begin this spring and continuing well into the summer months. Weekend Pick: Virginia Mountain Bike Festival

first_imgMemorial Day is a time to celebrate. Over the three day weekend we will celebrate many things: those we have lost in war, an extra day off from work, friends and family, hot dogs – so many hot dogs – and of course the official arrival of summer. Not sure how official it is, but for most, the last weekend in May kicks off the summer season and Labor Day closes it. The kids are out of school – or nearly – the weather is hitting that mid 70s sweet spot, the trees and flowers are in full regalia. Yes, Memorial Day weekend is the perfect time to get outside and celebrate this beautiful country we live in and all it has to offer in the outdoors, but it is not all backyard barbeques, beer, and beaches. Memorial Day weekend is also a time to gather with loved ones – or nice strangers – and give something back.Fortunately, if you are a mountain biker in Virginia, you can do it all at the annual Virginia Mountain Bike Festival. The Virginia Mountain Bike Festival is an event celebrating mountain biking in Virginia National Forests, and is organized by Shenandoah Mountain Touring, based out of Harrisonburg. Part bicycle jamboree, part hard-core riding weekend, the festival has something for everyone, the whole family, and even those who don’t ride.Beginning noon Friday and running through Monday evening at the Stokesville Campground – a private campground abutting George Washington National Forest outside Mt. Solon, Va. – the festival features events for all ages and abilities. There are organized rides that range from day-long epics to kids races, and everything in between that take off right from camp. Breakfast and dinner are provided, as well as maps, ride leaders, nightly bonfires and stargazing. You can also give a little back by participating in Sunday’s trail work session. Not into shredding dirt? The hiking is great, as well as road riding on Virginia’s vast system of country roads. This is a great way to gather for a weekend of hanging with like minded people, getting out on the trail, and celebrating all Virginia has to offer the mountain biking community.View Larger Maplast_img read more

The bill enables new investments in health tourism

first_imgToday, the 60th session of the Government of the Republic of Croatia was held in Banski dvori, and the Bill on the Provision of Services in Tourism was sent to the Croatian Parliament.Minister Gari Cappelli said that the proposed law transposes the European Union Directive from 2015 on travel in package arrangements and related travel arrangements into the legal order of the Republic of Croatia. “During the work on the text of this legal proposal, we assessed that the existing law is restrictive for the development of the overall provision of services in tourism and strengthening the competitiveness of Croatian tourism.”, He emphasized. Speaking about the novelties proposed by the law, the Minister mentioned the reduction of administrative barriers to starting, but also continuing entrepreneurial activity and prescribing services that are considered tourist services of health tourism, adding that the possible circle of providers of tourist services in health tourism is expanding.Tourist services are additionally regulated in congress tourism, as well as the provision of car rental services without a driver and who can provide them and under what conditions. Services are also being regulated tourist diving and allows the church and religious communities to organize pilgrimages and other journeys in the function of promoting and manifesting the faith. The provision of services is regulated tourist guide citizens of another Contracting State to the Treaty on the European Economic Area and the Swiss Confederation on a temporary or occasional basis, as well as the abolition of seminars and professional examinations for heads of higher education institutions and only the passing of professional examinations for heads of affairs before the examination commission. It is also planned to reduce the amount of misdemeanor fines, and introduce more lenient treatment of tourist inspectors towards service providers who commit misdemeanors by applying the principle of opportunity, ie by prescribing the possibility to eliminate irregularities and deficiencies identified in inspections without punishment. Finally, Minister Cappelli said that for the implementation of this Act it is not necessary to provide additional funds in the state budget of the Republic of Croatia, nor in the budgets of local and regional self-government units.Minister of Justice Dražen Bošnjaković explained that the Proposal of the Law on Amendments to the Law on Obligations is closely related to the Law on Provision of Services in Tourism. The proposed law proposes to delete Articles 881 to 903 of the Law on Obligations which regulate the contract on travel organization, which transposed into Croatian legislation the (old) Directive on travel in package arrangements (from 13 June 1990) which was placed out of force with the new Directive on Travel in Package Arrangements and Related Travel Arrangements (of 25 November 2015), which will be transposed into Croatian legislation by the new Law on the Provision of Services in Tourism. The draft Law on the Provision of Services in Tourism is mostly focused on the work of travel agencies as well as on tourist guides.
