Frost seeding tips

first_imgShare Facebook Twitter Google + LinkedIn Pinterest The time of the year when frost seedings are most effectively done will be here before long. This seeding method can be used to renovate pastures, improve stands, or alter the species mix within a pasture. Producers should remember however, this is only a means to get the seed in good contact with the soil. If the area you intend to frost seed currently has poor grass/legume growth, the first thing you need to determine is “why the problem has occurred?” Adding more seed to soil that lacks proper nutrient levels, has a pH that is to low or high for the intended crop, or if the crop is not managed properly for the plant species desired (for example repeated close grazings), the soil is not going to grow more of the desired forage if you just broadcast more seed. When plants are severely grazed, or re-grazed before a sufficient rest period has elapsed, the plant takes energy that has been stored in the roots as carbohydrates to support new leaf growth. As carbohydrates are removed from the roots, the root dies, separates from the plant and eventually decomposes. This process continues until enough green leaf surface once again develops to catch sufficient amounts of solar energy that support additional leaf growth and reestablish lost roots. Depending on the severity of root loss, slow re-growth may be noticed for a considerable amount of time.Areas chosen for frost seeding should not have large amounts of undecomposed plant material remaining in the field. If it does, put animals in those areas now to graze the area closely before seeding. Removing this plant material will make openings above the soil allowing seeds to fall to the ground. Frost seeding works best with legume seeds typically, because it is easier for smaller seeds to drop to the soil surface than it is for the larger, but lighter grass seeds. Making a muddy mess of an area is not the goal, but if weather conditions are going to cause livestock to trample an area, because you do not have a heavy use feed pad to put them onto, the sacrifice area may as well be where you plan to frost seed.Encouraging legume growth in pasture fields can minimize production costs by reducing the amount of nitrogen fertilization necessary for maximum forage growth. Stands that contain approximately 30% legumes generally need no additional nitrogen added. Legumes also improve the quality characteristics of a grass stand. Frost seeding offers several potential advantages when properly implemented. These may include: establishment of forage in undisturbed sod, reduced labor, energy and cash expense compared to conventional tillage methods, the ability to establish forages with minimal equipment investment, and little, if any, “non-grazing” period.last_img read more

Publishing Gun-Owner Names: Can Public Information Be Too Public?

first_imgTop Reasons to Go With Managed WordPress Hosting Tags:#Government#politics#privacy Related Posts On December 23, the Journal News published an interactive map showing the names and addresses of all pistol-permit holders in two New York counties. Some 43,000 comments later, the battle over the paper’s move rages on. Incensed gun owners claimed the article made their homes targets for thieves and drew unwarranted attention to them “like it was some sort of sex offender registry.” More than 20,000 people responded by circulating the author’s address, phone number on social media in a “How do YOU like it?” strategy. It didn’t end there. On January 3, Putnam County officials refused the paper’s request for its pistol permit records, citing the risk of “endangering citizens.”Is it Legal? The fight will probably go to the courts, and the county will probably lose, because the newspaper is perfectly within its legal rights to publish the information. The information was obtained legally, and everything published was available, for free, to any resident who asked.According to Mark Rumold, a staff attorney with the Electronic Frontiers Foundation, the issue is cut-and-dried: “I can say, in no uncertain terms, that publishing the information was legal and squarely protected by the First Amendment. Whether or not publishing the information was the right thing to do, or smart, or in the public interest, is probably a question of journalism ethics that I’m not qualified to answer.”Another criticism – leveled at both the newspaper that published the data and the gun owners who later published the author’s address – is that it’s a question of “intent.” According to that argument, if the intent of the publication was to shame the named parties, the First Amendment doesn’t protect that.Again, Rumold dismisses the argument: “The First Amendment, if it protects anything, certainly protects the publication of truthful, lawfully obtained information about a topic of significant public interest. That protection includes shielding a newspaper from civil liability – for example, for violations of privacy.” He adds that the line gets blurry in some “edge cases,” such as publicizing a rape victim’s name, but, in his opinion, “this case doesn’t even approximate that level of privacy intrusion.” So until someone comes out and says “Let’s all meet at 5pm to steal their guns,” Uncle Sam is fine with it.But Is It Right? As ReadWrite’s Fruzsina Eördögh pointed out in a recent article on minors’ privacy rights, having the ability to do something isn’t a green light to go ahead and do it. Journalists choose not to print information all the time, if they believe that information could cause harm.Legal does not equal ethical.Clearly, the paper published the list to attract readers, and that worked in spades. It’s less obvious that it considered the additional ramifications of its actions. Still, all of the permit holders referenced in the article are over 21 and (one would hope) aware of the fact that their permits were open to the public. If they were not made aware of that fact, the fault lies with the permitting system – not the newspaper. Rumold agrees: “In my opinion, for those upset about the publication of the information, I think their grievance is with New York’s legislature’s for making the information a public record.”What Happens Next?Governing bodies clearly have failed to anticipate the kind of proactive publication modern technology allows. While publishing a database of public information may be perfectly legal, it could very well cause unintended headaches. Over the next few years, we’ll probably see a lot more protections against massive data aggregation pop up in the form of data throttling or outright bans on publication, followed by court challenges to all those moves. We’ll see how that all plays out, but for now, it looks like the press has the advantage.Lead image courtesy of Shutterstock. 8 Best WordPress Hosting Solutions on the Marketcenter_img cormac foster Why Tech Companies Need Simpler Terms of Servic… A Web Developer’s New Best Friend is the AI Wai…last_img read more

Something More Than Competent

first_imgI love Toastmasters. If you want to learn to speak in public, there isn’t a better place to start. You only get better at speaking in public by speaking in public. While I was in the program, I saw some amazing transformations. You would know two other members of this club: Lewis Howes and Sarah Storer. What I didn’t like was the name of the first level of achievement. The words “competent communicator” always struck me as not being the right name for the achievement, even if accurate. Though competent comes before excellence, no one should aim to be competent, especially not someone who works in sales.ExpertiseOn a recent interview, I was asked to share a secret to success in sales (even though there are no secrets, everything being well-known and documented, and the real differentiator being the willingness to do what most others refuse to do). Even though it isn’t a secret, there isn’t much conversation about the need to become an expert. Being competent isn’t a competitive advantage, but being an expert surely is.When you say the word expert, many people believe that they need to be an expert in their business. It is true that you need to study and become an expert in your industry. You also need to know everything that you do different, why you deviate from your competitors, and how those differences make a difference. All of this is good and necessary.Others believe the word expert means they need to be an expert in their client’s businesses, a task that can prove more difficult. You have to work hard to learn how your client’s think about their businesses, but good questions can help you learn from all the contacts you meet with while you are selling. You can bend the learning curve in your direction if you do the work. The BorderlineWhere you need to be an expert is on the borderline where your business and your client’s business come together. The real expertise is knowing enough about your business and your client’s business to be able to provide advice worth taking. You have to understand why your client should change, and how they should change, while also possessing the experience of knowing how to help them produce the better future they are capable of achieving with your help.Competency is merely a milestone on the way to expert.
