A Torrance man was found guilty today of beating his stepfather – a popular Harbor College baseball coach – to death with a dumbbell, kicking him with steel-toed boots and stabbing him six times in the neck. Ashton Hurst, 36, showed no emotion as a Torrance Superior Court clerk read a jury’s verdict convicting him of one count of first-degree murder in the Feb. 8, 2005, killing of Robert Gauci, 44. Hurst faces 25 years to life in prison. The decision came after just a day and a half of deliberations following five weeks of testimony.
