This AIPowered Web App Turns Your Doodle Into Nightmare Fuel

first_imgStay on target A couple of years ago, Ikea did something pretty cool. They turned a bunch of kids’ drawings into a line of cuddly stuffed monsters that they sold in their stores. Now you can do something similar, except the results are a lot more disturbing. What you see at the top there was one of my attempts, which the clearly sinister AI that powers this nightmare generator turned into some sort of donkey-earned, grimacing cyclops. To be fair, the app’s real purpose is to create realistic-looking human faces from a detailed line art original.I mean, I really thought my second attempt would turn out a little better… Nope. Nope nope nope. This thing is even more hellish. If you have actual artistic ability and put some effort into your sketch, the results can be quite impressive. Like so:So what’s behind this image generator? An open-source project called pix2pix. It’s a machine learning tool that maps an input image to an output image based on data that’s been fed to it during the learning process. The source material, in this case, was images of human faces, logically enough. That explains why things go off the rails when you give it a rudimentary sketch to go by. Give it a sufficient level of detail, however, and it does a pretty darn good job of piecing together a human likeness. Now that you’ve peeked into the machine learning rabbit hole, why not waste the rest of your day playing around with some other tools that can create disturbing images, like the Deep Dream Generator… or browse through MIT’s Nightmare Machine creations!
