first_imgLocalities around Malta and Gozo will be offering free Wi-Fi as part of the European Union WiFi4EU initiative. 27 localities have already applied for the EU grant and will each receive €15,000. Qala in Gozo is already benefiting from this scheme , as Major Paul Buttiġieġ explains.During a press conference Parliamentary Secretary Silvio Parnis said that assistance will not stop with the EU grant but that further financial help will also be provided. The Parliamentary Secretary reiterated that the government believes in the autonomy of the local councils and that is why they are being asked to indicate where the Wi-Fi service should be installed in their areas.Parnis also urged all the other local councils who still have not submitted their application to do so. He also announced that a new service, mservice will soon be launched to draw citizens closer to their local councils.WiFi4EU is a European Commission initiative that promotes connectivity in public spaces and public buildings around Europe. The budget of €120 million between 2018 and 2020 will support the installation and Wi-Fi equipment in the centres of community life. 23736 municipalities around the EU have already registered.
