Police warn of lottery scam

first_imgIn the crimes, con artists approach victims claiming to have a winning lottery ticket and asking for help cashing it because they are undocumented. They offer a portion of the winnings if the victim hands over some “good faith” money to show they can be trusted. The con artists have preyed on elderly, Spanish-speaking victims, all of whom were approached on the street. “Some people have given them thousands,” Los Angeles police Detective Brenda Cureton said. “It’s sad.” The crime typically begins with a con artist telling a stranger they have won about $25,000 in the lottery. The con artist calls an unidentified person on a speakerphone and asks that person if they have the winning ticket. The person verifies the winning ticket and says he needs a legal resident to claim the money. WILMINGTON: At least four have been swindled after offering to help redeem a winning ticket. By Larry Altman STAFF WRITER Police on Friday warned Wilmington residents about con artists who have bilked at least four victims out of thousands of dollars in a lottery scam. “They tell them they will give them 10 percent of what the winning ticket is, but they have to put a certain amount of money in for the victim to be trusted,” Cureton said. Victims go to their banks and withdraw thousands of dollars, ranging from $1,000 to $10,000. One victim charged $3,000 to her credit card. Once they have the money, the con artists ask the victims to run an errand for them. When the victims get out of their car, the con artists drive away with their money. The suspects have worked in pairs of males or a man and a woman. In one crime, they drove a newer model, gray, four-door Toyota. They also used a tan sport utility vehicle and a light-colored Plymouth Voyager minivan. Anyone with information about the crimes is asked to call Los Angeles Harbor Division Detective Wusbaldo Batres at 310-522-2028, or 877-LAWFULL (529-3855). larry.altman@dailybreeze.com 160Want local news?Sign up for the Localist and stay informed Something went wrong. Mexico goes in search of history

first_imgMexico Mexico can extend Honduras’ frustration with historic ending to Hex Jon Arnold Click here to see more stories from this author @ArnoldcommaJon 23:02 10/10/17 FacebookTwitterRedditcopy Comments(0) Hector Herrera Mexico Trinidad and Tobago YURI CORTEZ Mexico WC Qualification CONCACAF Honduras v Mexico Honduras World Cup El Tri has the chance to keep Los Catrachos out of the World Cup, but the motivation to finish the round undefeated is even stronger Mexico is most of CONCACAF’s biggest rival. As for El Tri? They don’t harbor much hatred for Tuesday’s opponent, Honduras. Other than a frustrating defeat to Los Catrachos in the last cycle, there hasn’t been much of an issue with the Central Americans. However, that doesn’t mean Mexico doesn’t want to crush Honduras’ hopes of making the World Cup with a big win Tuesday. After all, it’s not just the possibility of extending the frustration Honduras felt after Costa Rica’s last-minute equalizer sent the Ticos into the World Cup and Honduras on the verge of missing for the first time in three cycles. Mexico has something to play for as well. It can become just the second-ever undefeated Hex team, and in doing so set the record for best-ever Hex finish with 24 points, one better than Costa Rica’s 1998 qualification mark.”We’re focused on the objectives and things we want to achieve as a national team, a group and a team, and that’s the only thing we have in mind,” defender Miguel Layun said at a news conference Monday night. “I don’t see anyone who is just content with what we’ve gotten. The group continues to be convinced in what we want to achieve and how we want to finish.” Article continues below Editors’ Picks Why Barcelona god Messi will never be worshipped in the same way in Argentina Lyon treble & England heartbreak: The full story behind Lucy Bronze’s dramatic 2019 Liverpool v Man City is now the league’s biggest rivalry and the bitterness is growing Megan Rapinoe: Born & brilliant in the U.S.A. His manager echoed the tone. Mexico isn’t in San Pedro Sula for anything but to get three points, Juan Carlos Osorio said. And really, why should Mexico care about eliminating or not eliminating Honduras? It did its job and qualified more than a month ago. Now all that’s left is to go for just a bit more glory. Hitting those marks in the Hex only means so much, but it would be another piece of supporting evidence, an arrow in Osorio’s quiver he can shoot at critics of his ideas, strategy and style.”We came in very hopeful. We’ve got a very good team and tomorrow we’re going to do everything possible to win, as always, to represent Mexico well and above all to achieve our goals,” Osorio said Monday. “We’ve achieved two of the three and tomorrow is the through, the great possibility for the group, for us to achieve and hopefully we can do it.”Layun quote gfxIt may be a bit tougher because of two notable absences. Hirving Lozano and Chicharito are headed back to their clubs in somewhat mysterious circumstances. You can bet that if this were a do-or-die qualification game for Mexico that both players would be able to go — Lozano overcoming his dislocated elbow and Chicharito fighting through his personal issue that prompted him to request special permission to skip the trip to Honduras.Yet it would be unwise to think those absences alone will derail El Tri. This Mexico side has the depth to manage. There are a glut of wingers in the squad — Lozano didn’t start the 3-1 win over Trinidad and Tobago — and Raul Jimenez has been awaiting an opportunity to play in his preferred center forward role.So even without those two stars, Mexico will be able to put out a lineup to trouble Honduras, and Osorio is confident that no matter what the personnel, his squad will be able to go out and look for all three points from the contest. “It’s a challenge, without a doubt, to plan, to prepare for two games in five sessions, but we’ve dedicated the same time to it as we’ve done for the other games, the same type of planning,” Osorio said at his news conference Monday night. “Surely tomorrow night you’re going to see in the starting XI a declaration of intention to play and look for the victory.”Honduras may not be a rival, but Mexico doesn’t care. It’s another team standing between it and a near-perfect Hex. If Mexico fails to top Los Catrachos in San Pedro Sula, it not only will complicate CONCACAF’s qualifying picture, it also will mean a cycle largely forgotten.Get all three points and this group will go down in history as one of the best ever to qualify from the region. It would mark a triumphant ending to what has been an overwhelmingly positive qualification campaign from El Tri and likely keep Osorio free from the intense magnifying glass that is the Mexican press until the moment of truth arrives this summer.last_img read more

Jio eyes foothold in entertainment industry

first_imgReliance Jio launches free 4G feature phone aka ‘JioPhone’ with unlimited voice, dataRIL AGM via YouTubeMukesh Ambani’s Reliance Jio has seen phenomenal growth over the last two years. After disrupting the telecom market with its cheap plans, the company is now eyeing the lucrative entertainment industry with plans to set up its own production house. The news comes from an unnamed source, who told Livemint: “Content market is still not properly tapped… Reliance has hired a bunch of scriptwriters and content creators and is in the process of setting up a huge production house.”If the report is accurate, it would mean that the company will create its own web series and short film taking on Netflix and Amazon’s over-the-top (OTT) services. The conglomerate will be banking on its 215 million subscribers to ensure the service is well received, and with plans to roll out JioGigaFiber, that number will only be higher.Currently, Jio offers video content in partnership with third-parties such as ALT Balaji, Eros and Reliance-owned Viacom through its Jio Cinema app.At a shareholder meeting recently, RIL chairman Mukesh Ambani said that video consumption has grown from 165 crore hours per month to 340 crore hours per month. The rise in part is due to the lowering cost of data plans, that Jio introduced when it entered the market. The report said that the content ecosystem business is being spearheaded by Jyoti Deshpande, former managing director at Eros. She has joined Reliance as head of the media and entertainment business. The source went on to add that Reliance has already got 20-25 creative people on board, and is targeting launch within 4-6 months of some web series. RIL has been aggressively expanding its presence in the OTT space, having purchased 24.9 percent stake in Balaji Telefilms last year, and 5 percent stake in Eros International in February this year. Earlier, Jio and Hotstar partnered up to offer JioTV to users. Reliance also owns Viacom18, which has a wide variety of entertainment channels such as Colors and MTV. Sacred Games posterTwitterWhile Jio’s entry into the content space is unlikely to shake up Netflix and Amazon’s dominance in the short run, it will have massive implications in the long run despite both companies investing heavily in Indian content. The news will also be good news for budding artists, who are looking for a big break and now have more options to chose from.last_img read more
