Choir Festival gets ready to welcome thousands of singers to Derry next weekChoirfestDerry and Strabane CouncilST COLUMB’S HALL Local choir CodettaTHE City of Derry International Choir Festival is just around the corner and is set to welcome over 2,000 singers to the city to take part in concerts, competitions, workshops and community performances from 24 to 28 October.Singers will be traveling from Colombia, Estonia, Norway, Finland, Germany and throughout Ireland and the UK to take part in the jam-packed schedule of events that will see choral performances in venues across the city. ShareTweet The Marian Consort, a young, dynamic early music group will perform an atmospheric candlelit concert in Christ Church on Friday 27 October, including a special collaboration with Derry’s Codetta Youth Choir. Friday’s choral treats continue late into the evening with the Late-Night Sing in St. Columb’s Hall, featuring three upbeat choirs and a set by The Paul McIntyre Jazz Trio.Local singers and music enthusiasts are invited to join the Trio the following day for a Big Sing Jazz Workshop, which is open to all with a love of music. It takes place at 4.30pm on Saturday 28 October in St. Columb’s Hall and is free of charge.The inaugural Every Voice Fringe Festival, managed by local choir Allegri, will ensure that Derry and the surrounding areas are immersed in singing in the week ahead, with pop-up performances, community concerts and Sunday church services.The festival is only possible because of the very generous support of funders and sponsors, and the festival is delighted to announce additional support for 2018 from Arts & Business NI. The festival opens on Wednesday 24 October with the Ulster Orchestra and 130-strong Festival Chorus performing Mozart’s Requiem in the Guildhall. Local soloists Doreen Curran and Laura Sheerin will be joined by Benito Rodriguez and Brian McAlea for the performance of this much-loved work. Chart-toppers VOCES8 will give local audiences a real treat in St. Columb’s Hall on Friday 26 October, with an a cappella set ranging from Bach to Van Morrison.
